Age care service hub opens at New Shimla

16-Dec-2011 SHIMLA: To provide multifarious services to the elderly under one roof and give relief to those who face isolation and loneliness apart from different physical and mental ailments in the greying years, HelpAge India launched an age care service hub (ASH) centre at New Shimla on Wednesday.

Dr Rajesh Kumar, state coordinator of HelpAge India, said, "To look into the needs and comfort of the elderly, the ASH centre is designed to provide multiple services to the elderly under a single roof. It is equipped with medical practitioners, physiotherapy equipment, physiocare, recreational facilities, library and computer facilities to enable active ageing and volunteering by senior citizens as also walkers, wheelchairs, volunteer counselling and helpline besides other facilities."

He added, "Though there are around 70 ASH centres in the country, the one launched in Shimla is the first-ever in the township. We are hopeful of launching more centres in different pockets of Shimla so that outreach of the services is widespread and is equitably accessible to the elderly."

Kumar said, "The aged cannot be bracketed as a homogenous group as the needs of elderly are different, depending on their physical conditions and age. In view of this, able-bodied senior citizens would render their services in the hubs for fellow elderly."
