Art sales to aid the elderly

03-Nov-2011

PAINTINGS by local artists are going under the hammer to benefit the elderly, thanks to one dedicated volunteer.

Bayswater funeral arranger Renee Gilmore has opened bidding on a landscape painting, the first of her planned monthly auction pieces.

Ms Gilmore will donate the money from the winning bid to aged care centre Mercy Place, Montrose. Ms Gilmore said the money would go towards hiring a bus so residents could go on more social outings.

She said it was important to ensure residents did not become socially isolated or lonely.

“I have been visiting one woman who doesn’t get regular visitors for about three years and, through those visits, have got to know the other residents,” Ms Gilmore said.

“My focus is on the residents and helping them get out more.”

Ms Gilmore said the amount of support received from local artists was overwhelming, with some donating paintings valued at more than $800.

“I’m really stoked with the amount of support I’ve received - to part with and donate a valuable piece of art is incredible.”

The painting for auction can be viewed at Simplicity Funerals, 28 Station St, Bayswater, or via the Art Auction for Tullamore Nursing Home Facebook page.

Bids are open until August 31.
